I create a lot of "fantasy" arms for my clients, but this one was at the center of a life-and-death trial in the 1500's. Henry Howard’s treasonous coat of arms was never illustrated at the time. Howard's father was the supreme heraldic authority for England.
I collaborated with a history scholar to re-create an illustration of the coat of arms that Sir Henry Howard designed for himself. Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, was an English nobleman who was executed in 1547. He was the son of Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey and when his father became Duke of Norfolk (1524) his son adopted the courtesy title of Earl of Surrey. He designed these arms to represent that title and I helped my client re-create them.
I created a digital illustration for prints, and I also created a 22" x 30" watercolor painting of the achievement.
